Whole Earth Echoes

The project aimed to create an embodied interface within a shared space that encourages communal engagement. The interface would encourage users to contribute and engage with cultural memories through tangible interactions. We wanted to ground people with a physical map that serves as a communal interface, emphasizing togetherness. We started with a question of how we might create a communal interactive experience that strengthens connections between people in a shared space? We ideated on different form factors, globe, etc., and different types of cultural memories—such as food, music, and personal experiences. Then the question was how to layer different types of memories on a geographic region. These considerations led us to use the storytelling aspect of a map surface. We started prototyping with a few specific countries, explored multiple interaction methods, including RFID, magnets and buttons. During the prototype, we focused on: Optimizing the sensor placement to ensure accurate detection Refining the interaction feedback Testing different form factors, materials for the input device and the map surface We explored different input devices in parallel, and decided to use a magnifier as a metaphor for the input device. Enhancing the user experience with tangible different materials like wood, etc., early placement of circuitry, and prompt testing could help refine the artifact and the experience. Moving forward, further iterations could explore integrating more types of cultural memories and refining the visual and tactile elements to enhance the user experience.
